DAPHNE, Ala.—The Daphne City Council voted Monday night to pass a resolution supporting the United States House of Representatives’ Resolution 56, which states that 80 percent of fines levied in the federal government’s Clean Water Act be dedicated to the states impacted by the British Petroleum oil spill.
“We initially were going to table it, but we passed it,” Councilwoman Cathy Barnette said. “We’re trying to show a gulf-wide unity in the funds coming back to the states,” Barnette said.
The federal act implements a fine against an entity that illegally discharges substance into a federal water body, and those fines go to the federal treasury.
However, the house resolution asks for a majority of the funds accumulated from the act to be given to the states along the Gulf of Mexico for environmental restoration.
