Daphne City Council nixes bowling alley in B-1 zone

DAPHNE — The Daphne City Council on Monday voted 4-3 against a motion to approve changes to the Land Use Ordinance’s Table of Permitted Uses; passage would have allowed bowling alleys and family entertainment centers in a B-1, local business, zone, with Planning Commission approval.

Councilmen John Lake, August Palumbo, Derek Boulware and Kelly Reese voted against the changes, while council members Cathy Barnette, Bailey Yelding and Ron Scott voted in favor.

The subject has been debated for almost two months, and the council voted 4-3 at the Nov. 1 meeting to set a public hearing for the Dec. 6 meeting. Yelding, Barnette, Reese and Scott voted in favor of having the public hearing, while Lake, Boulware and Palumbo voted against having the public hearing.

Other than Reese, the votes stayed the same on Monday’s final vote of the issue.

“The truth of the matter is the city council hasn’t been asked to decide if this property is an allowable location for a bowling alley,” Reese said, noting that the issue is about the Land Use Ordinance change. “Most arguments against it have been ‘Not in my backyard’ arguments. I am empathetic for that view, but not persuaded.”
