Daphne beats McGill-Toolen 43-21

DAPHNE, Ala. — With the 6A Region 2 title in their pocket, the Daphne Trojans still went out and played as though a playoff berth was at stake and defeated the same team that knocked off Davidson earlier in the year.

The 43-21 win over McGill-Toolen Catholic at Jubilee Stadium Friday night closed the 2010 region schedule with Daphne a perfect 7-0 in Region 2 and 9-0 overall. The Yellow Jackets go into the final week of the regular season at 6-3, 4-3. Daphne travels to Baker this Friday. The Jackets will play Murphy at Lipscomb Stadium.

Daphne coach Glenn Vickery was proud of how his team approached the game.

“I couldn’t be any happier for how we responded," he said. "Some people with success sit back, and I’m proud of our kids for challenging themselves to come out and play hard in a game that was really for pride.”

But the Trojans may have also been motivated to end the Jackets win streak over DHS the last two years.

"We don't believe in revenge," Vickery said. "But we did remind them of the losses. But I think that matters for about 10 seconds in a game. McGill's been good. We just challenged our kids to play as best as they could and I think in some areas, we did."

Daphne led 34-7 at the half, but the Jackets outscored the Trojans 14-9 in the second half.

"We came out and really played well, then McGill made some adjustments," Vickery said. "We had a pretty good lead and sort of sat on the ball some, but give McGill credit."

Yellow Jackets coach Mike Dean was pleased with how his team fought back after falling behind. "I'm proud of how they fought back in the second half. A lot of teams would have just said the heck with it, but they didn't."

The Jackets scored the most points the Trojans have allowed all year, but it would not be enough.

"We needed to play with the same intensity (tonight) as we did with Davidson but we didn't execute and just like that we were down 14-0 and now you're playing catchup. But they’re (Daphne) No. 2 for a reason,” Dean said. “Daphne’s the best team in the south right now. Tonight they proved it. They came out on a mission. We had to play perfect tonight to have a chance."

T.J. Yeldon capped Daphne's opening drive with a 30-yard touchdown run. It was 14-0 Daphne after Israel Lamprakes scored from the wildcat set from the one, 20-0 after Russ Mosley hit Clarke Newsome out of the back field for an 11-yard TD pass on Newsome's birthday and 27-0 after Mosley connected with Jonathan McGaster on a fade to the left corner of the endzone. There was 3:50 left in the half.

The Jackets then scored after going 66 yards when Lanse Watson ran it in from the 10. But Daphne answered with a score with 35.2 seconds to go when Mosley threw a fade to Yeldon at the right corner to make it 34-7.

The Trojans scored on a safety in the third quarter to make it 36-7, but the Jackets put a pair of long, clock-consuming drives together resulting in TD passes from Jason Smith to Matt Delaney (4 yards) and Chris Lewis (20 yards) that made the score 36-21 with 4:10 left in the game.

The final score was a 28-yard outside run by Yeldon and Daphne defensive back Zach Houston ended the final McGill drive with an interception.

Mosley was 7-of-12 passing for 132 yards, Yeldon had 15 carries for 120 yards and Lamprakes produced 203 yards, 83 rushing five times and 120 receiving four passes. Houston's interception kept the Daphne defensive streak of at least one INT per game so far this season.
