Daphne authorities locate body of missing man

Posted

Daphne Police have located the body of a missing Bay Minette man.

Sources have confirmed that 33-year-old Bay Minette resident Donald Jackson’s body was retrieved from D’Olive Creek Monday evening.

Initially, reports of the missing man led Daphne Police to find a truck submerged in D’Olive Creek near the Hampton Inn in Daphne.

Daphne Police Captain Jud Beedy said initially that his department did not suspect any foul play.

“There is no suspected foul play at this time,” Beedy said.

Authorities initially found the man’s truck Sunday evening, but Beedy said at the time there was no sign of a body in the truck.

“We’re going to have to do search and rescue until we verify who it is or where he is,” Beedy said.

The missing man was last seen leaving the nearby Top of the Bay restaurant before his disappearance. Beedy said cell phone tracking helped the police better locate where the man could be.

“They had tracked his cell phone the last time it was in use to a tower just north of Daphne in Spanish Fort,” Beedy said. “So, we knew that he was probably close.”

Because of that information from the cell data, the search led them to the service road near the Hampton Inn after noticing a scrape of paint on the guard rail that looked new.

Authorities suspended the search Sunday night due to inclement weather conditions, but Daphne Search and Rescue was back out in the creek Monday, where they eventually located the body of the missing person.

During Daphne’s city council meeting Monday night, Police Chief David Carpenter told the council the man’s body had been located.

“His body was recovered this evening,” Carpenter said. This does bring some closure, but in a bad way.”

Carpenter and Daphne city leaders praised the Daphne Search and Rescue department for their assistance in the search. The volunteer organization has partnered with the city and others across the county to assist in similar situations.
