The Daphne Animal Shelter is set to close Monday, May 29, and eight dogs and several kittens are still in need of adoption.
The shelter has several adoption events scheduled this month in hopes of finding new homes for the animals and will offer discounts on adoption fees.
Daphne City Council recently approved funding for a new state-of-the-art animal shelter to be built on the same site of the current one at 7145 Johnson Road. Demolition and construction are scheduled to begin June 1.
According to Ange Baggett, events and marketing director for the city, animals that don't get adopted will be transfered to the Baldwin County Animals shelter or an area rescue group.
During construction, the animal shelter will operate out of a temporary facility that includes a kennel trailer, an office trailer and a play yard.
“We are working closely with the Baldwin County Animal Shelter and local rescues,” said Betsy Schneider, director of operations for the city, in a news release. “We have a great partnership and are thankful they have agreed to assist us during the construction, which is expected to take about a year.”
Make plans to attend one of the adoption events scheduled over the next few weeks. The first is today, Friday, May 5, from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Daphne Animal Shelter. Another opportunity to adopt is Saturday, May 13, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Spring Festival at Al Trione Sports Complex.
