Cruise the history of the Civil War in Coastal Alabama

Posted

Historic Blakeley State Park is offering a special cruise in November to explore the history of the Civil War from a view on the water.

The cruise departs Bartram Landing at Five Rivers Delta Resource Center at 10 a.m. on Nov. 5 for a 90-minute journey along the waterways of the lower Delta.

While cruising the dark waters of what is often referred to as America's Amazon, guides will discuss the sites along the water where troops battled for control of the city of Mobile.

Alabama's largest Civil War action took place in the region and featured over 50,000 troops and more than four dozen warships that faced off along waterways near Spanish Fort and Fort Blakeley. The cruise explores these events and takes guests to some historic areas which can only be accessed by water.

In addition, at 9 a.m., just before the cruise departs, acclaimed local naturalist Fred Nation will guide visitors along a special "tree walk" on the grounds of Five Rivers Delta Resource Center.

Blakeley State Park is the Delta's longest-running cruise operator and is home to a 50-passenger covered pontoon boat, the Delta Explorer. The boat is a Coast Guard-licensed vessel featuring bench seating and a restroom. The vessel is handicapped accessible.
