Cruise-in brings in toys (for tots)

SPANISH FORT, Ala.— It was all about toys and cars Saturday for the Eastern Shore Cruisers’ fifth annual Toys for Tots Cruise-In.

About 97 cruisers came equipped with a toy for a tot to the year’s final cruise-in to ensure a child somewhere will have a Christmas.

A 1-ton military truck was half full of toys, organizer Fred Minke said.

The U.S. Marine Corps truck was filled with basketballs, baby dolls, board games like Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders, teddy bears, Incredible Hulk punching hands, Barbies and more.

The raffle and auction raised about $520 for USA Children’s and Women’s hospital and Minke’s daughter, Madisen, manned a lemonade stand that brought in about $100, which will also benefit the hospital, Minke said.

“I love cars and you gotta help the kids,” Scott Law, of Pensacola, Fla., said. “It’s a good feeling to know a child will have a toy from me.”

Minke was hoping for a big turnout, and he got just that.

“It went great,” he said. “We had 97 cars registered and I think everyone had a good time.

“We had everything from footballs to Transformers, doll babies, Hot Wheels and a lot more; lots of games.”

The Eastern Shore Cruisers will begin its monthly cruise-ins in March and will continue on through November on the second Saturday of those months, Minke said.
