Crowning of queen, parade planned for Oct. 6-7

GULF SHORES - The Gulf Shores High School student body has voted and selected 15 young women to represent the school as its 2016 Homecoming Queen’s Court, and the ladies have a very busy week ahead of them.

All members of the Queen’s court began the week with a sash pinning ceremony on Monday sponsored by the Ruby Red Slipper Cafe in Orange Beach.

This formal breakfast honoring these ladies and signifies the beginning of their reign will begin at 7:45 a.m. Each member of the court chose a person of honor to pin her sash and has written a personalized tribute to this person of honor that will be read aloud as she is pinned.

Members of the court will also be participating in the activities scheduled throughout the school week, particularly including the parade on Thursday beginning at 4 p.m. Each member of the court will ride in the parade in a vehicle donated by Southern Chevrolet.

With 43 floats, there’ll be plenty to see at the Homecoming parade. GSHS students welcome members of the community to find a place along the parade route and join in the entertaining festivities.

The Queen will ultimately be determined by popular vote of the entire student body and will be crowned during the halftime show on Friday night when the Dolphins battle the Daphne Trojans at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

The theme for this year’s homecoming is “Under The Big Top: The Greatest Show on the Turf.”

Students from each of the classes will be going head to head in various competitions during lunch and after school throughout the week to earn points for their respective grades.

One particularly exciting activity, lunchtime karaoke featuring members of the King’s Court, is a favorite among students and teachers alike. The winning class will receive the spirit award at the pep rally on Friday.
