LOXLEY, Ala. — A one-car crash on Interstate 10 near Loxley Wednesday, June 4, has left a Girl Scout camp counselor, Kristen Robinson, 21, of Mobile, with a broken pelvis and an 11-year-old girl, Savannah Agell, with arm injuries.
As of Thursday afternoon, the pair were being treated at the USA Medical Center. They were taken by helicopter from the accident scene to the hospital. According to the State Police, Robinson was the driver of the 2002 Honda Oddessy van. None of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.
Three other Girl Scouts, Katelyn Burk, 17, Rebecca Eversole, 12, and Erica Eversole, 14, all of Mobile escaped with relatively minor injuries, a Girl Scout spokesperson said. They were taken to USAMC via ambulance, treated and released.
Two other girls, both 13, Christina Irion and Kayli Pledger both of Spanish Fort were unhurt.
According to Liz Brant, the CEO of Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama, the group was returning to Scoutshire Woods, a Girl Scout camp in Citronelle, near Mobile, from a kayaking expedition in Florida, one of the highlights of the week at camp. She has visited the young women in the hospital.
“It was just an accident, said Brent. “They went into a guardrail.”
Both sets of parents, says Brant, have been “wonderful” through the ordeal.
“One of the staff made the call,” said Brent.
Brent credits the camp’s overall safety precautions for keeping injuries to a minimum. All the van’s passengers were wearing safety belts, she said.
“The girls had done all the safety precautions,” said Brent. “We are always cognizant of safety procedures.”
A state police investigation into the crash is continuing.
