Melvin Rogers Coxwell, 79, born Jan. 16, 1929 in East Brewton, a resident of Daphne died Friday, March 7, 2008 .
He was the son of James E. and Bettie E. Coxwell. He served during the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force. He was a long-time resident of Daphne, an active member of The Spanish Fort United Methodist Church and a retired banker.
He was a graduate of W. S. Neal High School, East Brewton. The University of Alabama with a B. S. degree in commerce and business administration; the American Institute of Banking, Mobile Chapter; the School of Banking of the South, Louisiana State University and The National Commercial Lending School, University of Oklahoma.
He was a member and officer of University Organizations, the University of Alabama National Alumni Association; University of Alabama Alumni Mobile Chapter; Red Elephant Club of Mobile; University of Alabama Women's Athletic Advisory Board. He served on Board since inception of department; University of Alabama Commerce Executive Society; Long Range Planning Committee at the National Alumni Association, Minute Man for the University, American Institute of Banking, American Bankers Association, Mobile Chamber of Commerce, Mobile County Wildlife Association, Mobile Allied Arts Association, Mobile Touchdown Club.
He was also a member of two Mystic organizations, The Mobile Country Club and the Mobile Lions Club.
He was past president of Lake Forest Men’s Golf Association, Lake Forest Yacht and Country Club, Athlestan Club, The Spanish Fort/Lake Forest Volunteer Fire Department, Daphne Lions Club, Daphne Junior High School P. T. A.
He was a member of Spanish Fort United Methodist Church, Administrative Board, Board of Trustees and Chairman of Finance Committee and Long Range Planning Committee. He was a past Board member of Alabama West Florida Methodist Foundation. He was also a member of Investment Committee. He was a member of Lake Forest Property Owners Association. He previously served as treasurer and chariman of the Finance Comittee.
He was named Citizen of the Year in 1972 by the Lake Forest Garden Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Elizabeth Coxwell, and his parents, James E. and Bettie E. Coxwell.
Survivors include a daughter Mary Jane (Mitch) Williams. one grandson, Darrell James Harbison; and a brother, Mitchell G. Coxwell.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. with funeral services at 2 p.m. Wednesday , March 12 at Spanish Fort United Methodist Church.
Honoray Pallbears will be The Red Elephant Club.
