Covered Bridge Tour Saturday in Elberta

ELBERTA — The third annual Covered Bridge Tour to Benefit St. Mary’s Home is set for this weekend.

Hosted by Clark Price, the event will be held 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at 12143 Selena Lane, a mile south of Elberta on County Road 83. Admission is $10 per car.

Price explained that he has been involved with helping St. Mary’s for a long time.

“St. Mary’s Children’s Home is in Mobile,” he said. “It’s the oldest children’s home in Alabama.”

Centered around a covered bridge built by Price, the tour includes live music provided by Jessie Stokes, antique tractors on display by the South Alabama Antique Tractor and Engine Club and nature walks to the creek. In addition, vendors with concessions and other wares for sale will be on hand.

“I’ve also got 150 to 200 complimentary cups of gumbo from the Oyster House,” Price said, “and $5-gift certificates to Gulf Bowl in Foley to give away.”

But Price hopes that attendees will learn a little something Saturday, as well.

“They’ll become more knowledgeable about covered bridges throughout the United States and about preservation of those bridges,” he said.

When it started in 2011, the tour attracted approximately 700 people.

“Last year, it had a little over 2,700,” Price said.

Once expenses were paid, approximately $1,600 went to the children’s home.
