DAPHNE, Ala. — The next program of the Baldwin County Historical Society is set for Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Daphne Senior Center, 2605 U.S. Highway 98. “Governor George Johnstone and the Colony of British West Florida” is the topic.

Robin Fabel, PhD, will present a historical view of economical and political activities in an area that includes present-day Baldwin County. Specifically, he will present reasons why Great Britain wanted the Floridas and will explore the life of George Johnstone, the first governor of the Colony of British West Florida. He will describe Johnstone’s earlier seagoing life when he rose to the rank of Commodore in the Royal Navy, his achievements as governor of the Colony of British West Florida, and the reasons for his recall after a short term in office.

About the speaker

Fabel is a native of Great Britain who obtained his B.A. and his M.A. degrees from St. John’s (Oxford). He taught at Worksop College in England and at Arkansas College before joining the faculty of Auburn University in Alabama.

He became an assistant professor at Auburn in 1975 and retired from there in 2001 as the Hollifield Professor of Southern History. As a Fullbright fellow, he taught in Singapore in 1967 and in South Africa in 1998. In 1992, Fabel was honored as the Auburn University Graduate School Teacher of the Year. He has published four books with academic presses and has written numerous historical articles. He is currently the president of the Fairhope Unitarian Fellowship.
