MOBILE — Baldwin County track and field athletes did well at the 6A Section 1 meet Friday and Saturday at McGill-Toolen Catholic High School.

Several will be representing their school as well as south Alabama this weekend as Gulf Shores will host the 2007 state meet May 4 and 5.

Montrose resident, McGill-Toolen captain and twice defending 6A state Javelin champion Angela McCord led the Lady Yellow Jackets to a team victory. Murphy came in second and Foley’s Lady Lions took third.

The boys side looked the same in team finishes with the Jackets, Panthers and Lions all placing in order.

Foley coach D.D. Andersen was pleased with her teams and individual results and very glad the state meet will be in familiar territory this year.

“We are going to work hard this week and hopefully make a good showing at the state meet this weekend,” she said. “We are just really excited to be competing for a home crowd.”

Foley had 10 athletes meet the tough 6A qualifying requirements: Glen Odom (Javelin), Erin Sims (Discus), Gabby Hamby (High Jump), Rayven Adams (High Jump), Trevor Graves (Discus), Julio Jones (Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, 100M), Shakeria Williams (Long Jump, 100M), Lauren McGaster (Triple Jump), Brian Johnson (Triple Jump), and Travon Schultz (300M Hurdles).

Fairhope’s 4 x 800 girls relay team qualified for the state track meet Friday at the Section 1 meet. The Lady Pirates placed second in the section and posted a school record time of 10:55.22. The team includes Ali Hudson, Payton Tanner, Laura Byrne, and Haley Evans.

Daphne’s Kyle Smith qualified in the Javelin and Pole Vault.

Allison Smith qualified in the 3200 meter run and Daniel Young qualified in the 1600 meter run.

Baldwin County 2007 shotput champion Candice Caldwell qualified and will represent the BCHS Lady Tigers of Bay Minette after claiming the Section 1 6A title with a winning throw of 34-02.

Others athletes may have qualified for the state meet including division 5A athletes from Gulf Shores and Spanish Fort.
