County implements 1-cent tax

BAY MINETTE — The Baldwin County Commission on Tuesday unanimously approved an implementation ordinance for a 1-cent sales and use tax which is expected to generate about $25 million a year for the Baldwin County School System.

Commissioners also agreed to consider a reduction in the 2 percent collection fee stipulated in the ordinance. The panel agreed to review the matter during budgetary hearings in the summer and may may make an appropriation to the school system, rather than change the ordinance.

The 1-cent, across-the-board, countywide tax begins June 1 and will end May 31, 2013.

Baldwin County voters approved the additional taxation by referendum March 23, which   will generate about $75 million for the financially struggling school system.

The Baldwin County Board of Education has earmarked the additional funding for maintaining an adequate level of staffing at the local school level, and restoring about 40 staff positions, including teachers, special education positions, nurses, bus drivers and lunch room workers.

The BOE also plans to maintain levels of extra-curricular supplements and associated art, band, music and athletic programs.
