On Jan. 22, Baldwin County Sheriff Deputies conducted a vehicle stop on I-10 westbound at the 54 mile marker, just east of the Wilcox Road exit, on a silver 2012 Dodge Ram with Texas license plates. It was occupied by Jimy Alexander Torres-Mejia, Jessy Salazar, Fabio Ramon Matute Aguilar and Linda Johanna Rodriguez Serrano.
The subjects claimed to be headed to Houston after visiting Miami. They stated they had gone to Florida to ship perfume and furniture to one of their stores in Honduras via the Port of Miami. After further investigation it was discovered that the driver, Jimy Alexander Torres Mejia, was a fugitive wanted for deportation.
A consensual search of the vehicle reveled approximately 201 counterfeit goods to include purses, wallets, sunglasses, shoes and belts (Gucci, Versace, Coach, Chanel, Torre Burch, Louis Vuitton, etc.) with an estimated legitimate value, (were they real), of $185,000. Also seized were two large boxes of suspected counterfeit perfume and cologne of various brands.
Torres-Mejia and Salazar took ownership of the items and stated they were returning to Texas to sell them for a profit on the open market. Both were arrested and charged with theft of trademark/ trade secret, and ICE put a detainer on Torres-Mejia.
Both were transported to the Baldwin County Corrections Center.
