Council supports RHS Lady Bear basketball team

The Robertsdale City Council voted Monday to give $1,000 to Robertsdale High School to help with expenses incurred by the Robertsdale varsity girls’ basketball team during the postseason.

The team finished the season as Area and Regional champions, said RHS Athletic Director Scott Phelps, breaking several school records during the season en route to earning the team’s first-ever berth to the Final Four in Birmingham.

“Anytime you can have that kind of success and be able to represent the city of Robertsdale is a positive thing for the school and for the city,” said Phelps, who spoke on behalf of Lady Bear Head Coach Scott Harville, who also attended Monday’s meeting.

The team incurred several expenses, including two bus trips to Montgomery and the trip to Birmingham.

“We appreciate any help the city can give to help these girls who represented their city well,” Phelps said.

All of the city council members expressed their congratulations for the team. Council member Joe Kitchens recommended that the city give $1,000 to help with the expenses.

“We want to extend our congratulations for the great job you did this season,” Kitchens said. “ I got an opportunity to see the team play several times this season and they truely did represent Robertsdale with pride.”

The council voted unanimously to approve the measure. Paul Hollingsworth, who is an assistant principal at Robertsdale High School, abstained from voting.

In other business Monday, the council voted to support the 9th Annual Robertsdale Rotary Club Rodeo, which will be held March 14-16 at the new fairgrounds arena in Robertsdale.

In addition to the new facility, the Rodeo has also added an extra day and extra entertainment for this year, reported Ruthie Campbell and Tom Gulledge, speaking on behalf of the Rodeo.

First the council voted to allow the Rodeo to place a banner accross Fairgrounds Road between Robertsdale High School and Willy T’s promoting the event.

The council also approved allowing the Rotary Club the use of the facility for the three days of the event without having to pay the standard usage fee.

The city of Robertsdale is allowed to use the facility for 10 days every year, rent-free. By giving the Rotary Club three of those days, it will allow the Rotary Club to hold the event without having to pay for the use of the facility.

“I think we need to be careful who we allow to use those days, but this is for a worthy cause and I certainly don’t have a problem in this case,” Kitchens said.

Both Kitchens and Mayor Charles Murphy, who are members of the Rotary Club, abstained from voting on the two measures, which were passed unanimously.

Hollingsworth suggested after the vote that the council get together to decide on future use of the facility.

“If we’re not careful we could end up giving away all of our days and not have any left,” he said.

In other business Monday the council:

— Voted to accept the city’s annual audit report.

— Approved sewer grant invoices in the amount f $33,300 for reimbursement.

— Voted to release the bond from Inglewood Subdivision.

— Received a report on upgrading the city’s electrical system.

— Tabled action on establishing and adopting a schedule for impact fees for the city.

— Received a report from county officials on the Bicentennial Park to be located on Highway 225 south of Stockton.
