SILVERHILL, Ala. — One of the big issues on the minds of Silverhill Council members is passing a budget for the 2010 fiscal year.
The council will hold a work session beginning at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14 to discuss budget concerns.
The current fiscal year ends Sept. 30, but council members voted to operate under the 2008 budget until the 2009 budget was adopted in March.
With the 2009 budget, the Town opeated under a nearly $100,000 deficit with expenditures totalling $943,225 and revenues of a projected $845,817, a projected deficit of $97,408.
The 2009 budget called for a deficit of $18,758 in the general fund with expenditures of $553,375 and $534,617 in revenue. The town’s water and gas department operated under a deficit of $78,650 for 2009 with expenses of $389,850 to revenues and $311,200.
Little action was taken during Monday’s meeting. The public part of the meeting lasted only about 20 minutes, with Council members meeting for about 45 minutes in executive session with the town attorney to discuss “pending litigation.”
Among action Monday, the council approved spending $150 for the donation of children’s books in memory of Elsie and Leslie Chandler to the town’s library.
The council also approved a five-year, $30,000 loan to pay for engineering costs involved in the town’s sidewalk grant.
In other business Monday, the council:
— Voted 4-1 to table action on the purchase of an ad in the Robbertsdale High School yearbook. Rodney Criswell voted against the measure. Steve Brooks was not present at Monday’s meeting.
— Voted 4-1 to table action on the purchase of an ad in the Central Baldwin Middle School yearbook. Criswell voted against the measure.
— Approved the purchase of an advertisement in the 2009 Heritage Day supplement for Gulf Coast Newspapers at a cost of $400.
The 26th annual Heritage Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 in downtown Silverhill.
Deadline for arts and crafts exhitors is Wednesday, Sept. 30 for the festival.
Exhibitors can begin setting up on Friday, Oct. 16 from 3 to 8 p.m. Exhibits must be set up by 8 a.m. Saturday. Once you have arrived and unloaded your goods, you are required to move your vehicle to a parking area.
Each display area is 12-foot by 15-foot and is located in the center of town. Submit to Town of Silverhill Heritage Day Festival, P.O. Box 309, Silverhill, AL 36576.
Exhibitors are responsible for necessary material in setting up their display (tables, chairs, hanging displays, etc.) If you are a new exhibitor, please include a photograph of your display with your application. Spaces will be limited and are assigned on a first-come basis.
