Council delays budget vote

DAPHNE — The City Council on Monday voted to extend the operation of the 2007 fiscal year budget until further revisions can be made to the 2008 budget.

Council members voted 6-0 to continue with the 2007 operating budget. Councilman August Palumbo was absent.

The 2008 budget is about $17 million. City leaders at a special meeting Sept. 24 voted to cut the budget by 9 percent — about $360,000 — and increasing the funds for the capital budget. If the revised budget was deemed unsatisfactory, more cuts would be made.

Also on Monday, city leaders passed a motion to allow the mayor to enter into a learning partnership contract with Columbia Southern University.

CSU will give city employees a chance to further their careers and possibly earn credit with training and courses they have already completed.

Council did not pass a motion to authorize the mayor to enter into an economic development agreement with the Renaissance Center west of Alabama Highway 181 and U.S. 90.
