Council conducts routine business

LOXLEY, Ala. — The Loxley town council met Monday night with a number of ceremonial and routine resolutions before it.

All the council members except Michael Allegri were present at the meeting.

The meeting began with an adjustment of the minutes. An ad request from the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce for $1,200 was approved. However, the minutes only reflected council member Teal’s opposition to the measure. The minutes, council member Katherine Breeden said, should reflect council member Allegeri’s opposition to the measure as well.

The council voted to amend the minutes.

The council also approved the sale of a 1975 Ford backhoe, a 1993 Ford Club Wagon and a 2000 Chevrolet one-ton utility truck. Superintendent of Utilities Tommy Hudson told the council that the items are no longer needed or useful to the town. The resolution said the Mayor and Town Cerk are authorized to sell the items for a “reasonable value.”

The council also voted unanimously to accept the bid by Pepco to provide gas and diesel fuel to the town.

The council also voted to authorize the establishment of an account at United Bank at their Loxley branch. Mayor Billy Middleton explained that “funds earmarked for capital improvements” were to be kept in the account. A majority of members present voted for the measure. Jeffrey Knight abstained. hHe explained later that a family member works for United Bank.

In other council action

— The council voted to pay 53,699.16 in town bills.

— Approved a resolution supporting the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan.

— Approved plans for a Martin Luther King Day march from the Loxley Church of God to the Civic Center Jan. 18, 2010.

— Approved sending three town employees to the National Hurricane Conference in Orlando in March of 2010. The cost should be about $1,350 “plus gas” said Middleton.

Breeden asked if this included meals, and was told that employees will submit expense reports for that.

— The council also approved a proclamation making the first of May, 2010 “Silver Star Banner Day” in the town.

With no other business before the council, Middleton declared the meeting adjourned.
