Council approves Scout's proposal to clean up Old Methodist Church Museum and cemetery

DAPHNE, Ala.—Prospective Eagle Scout Drew Williams addressed the Daphne City Council Monday to obtain approval for his Eagle Scout project. He plans to rejuvenate the land surrounding the second oldest church building in Baldwin County, the Old Methodist Church Museum.

Williams said he was approached by a member of the museum’s board of directors to see if he would be interested in leading a project to clear the underbrush on newly purchased land adjacent to the cemetery, which has been encroaching on some of the graves.

“I have highlighted a triangular-shaped piece of land at the Old Methodist Church and Museum on Dryer Avenue. Basically, I am going to be cleaning it out and taking care of underbrush if people want to access it or make use of it and also so it won’t be encroaching on any of the graves. No work has even been done to take care of it so my goal is just to make it more accessible and beautify the property to make it more appealing to the community,” Williams said.

Councilman Ron Scott said the area has a lot of history and applauded Williams for his efforts.

“We certainly appreciate the efforts. Our Eagle Scout candidates have brought forth a lot of different projects and it gives us a great sense of pride to be able to be a little bit part of that,” Scott said.

Councilman August Palumbo requested a status update from Williams once the project was completed.
