Council approves budget

SILVERHILL — The Town of Silverhill is projecting a slight surplus with the adoption of the 2008-09 fiscal year budget Monday night at Silverhill Town Hall.

The budget projections included a total revenue of just $802,857 with expenses of $777,615 for a total projected surplus of $25,242.

The town projected revenues in the General Fund budget of $473,382 for the coming year with expenses totalling $456,590 for a projected surplus of $16,792.

In the Water and Gas Proprietary Fund budget, the town projected revenues of $329,475 with projected expenses of $321,025 for a surplus of $8,450.

The fiscal year runs from Oct. 1, 2007 through Sept. 30, 2008.

In other business Monday, the town approved the free use of Little Hall by churches and civic groups with the town limits.

The council voted unanimously to approve the measure, which states that churches and non-profit civic groups within the town limits may use the Little Hall twice per year at no charge.

Groups within the town limits using Little Hall more than twice must come before the town for approval. Anyone outside the town limits who wishes to use the facility must also receive approval from the town.

In other business Monday, the council:

— Approved changes to the town’s business license code to bring the town into compliance with the state code.

— Tabled a measure for tax exempt district approval for further review by the town’s attorney.

— Tabled a measure for automatic bank draft payments.

— Authorized Police Chief Kim Wasdin and Superintendent of Utilities Steve Williams to look into the purchase of dress shirts for town employees to wear when attending continuing education classes.

— Adopted a resolution stating the town’s intention to apply for sidewalk improvement grants for the town.

— Approved the hiring of Jason Bengston as a part-time temporary police officer for the town.
