James E. “Jim” Corley, 86, of Sandusky, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2007 at his home after a lengthy illness.

He was born Feb. 11, 1921 in Bay Minette. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard having served on the U.S. Cutter “Crocus,” during World War II. For many years he had worked as a master carpenter at the Philco Company and later for Chrysler Plastics where he retired in 1986. He was an avid organic gardener and was known for his tomatoes and hot peppers. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and in his earlier days he coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover Cleveland and Myrtle Miller Corley; son, Tames T. Corley (1963); brother Clarence Corley; three sisters, Crystal Virginia, Annie Lucielle and Patricia Corley.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary Helen Brengartner Corley; children, Don (Kim) Corley of Sandusky, Sandy Doerner of Columbus, Ohio, Pam Woodruff of Sandusky, Amy (Lloyd “Butch”) Rockwell of Sandusky; 10 grandchildren, Mary Beth, Tevon, Emily, Niki, Bryan, Stephanie, Samantha, Brandon, Amber and Ashley; five great-grandchildren, Morgan, Matthew, Riley, Owen and Bailey; sisters, Helen Overstreet, Ruth Barac; brothers, Horace (Rose) Corley, Jesse (Margaret) Corley, Roy (Bonnie) Corley, all of Bay Minette; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday Aug. 9 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sandusky, Ohio, with Father Doug Garand officiating. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery in Sandusky.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Columbus OH, 6600 Busch Blvd., Suite 210, Columbus, OH 43229 or to Stein Hospice Service, Inc., 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870 or to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 429 Central Avenue, Sandusky, OH 44870.
