ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — If somebody told you the Winn-Dixie in Robertsdale had “Cops on Top,” Friday or Saturday you might be forgiven if you checked their eyes and smelled their breath. You might have taken the car keys.

But, it was true.

Local police departments around Alabama stationed “Cops on Top” of local buildings. The purpose was to raise money for Special Olympics. Officers from Robertsdale and Loxley were on top of the supermarket at the corner of Highway 59 and Highway 104

“We raised a good bit yesterday,” said Sgt. Rex Bishop of the Robertsdale Police Department, referring to Friday.

“The idea is basically to raise awareness of Special Olympics,” said Loxley Police Officer Michael Landenwich. He added that the goal of both departments was to raise $10,000 and it looked like the officers were “on track” to do just that. Final amounts were not available by press time.

“We are doing this for Special Olympics,” said Cpl. Ted Stone of the Robertsdale Police Department.

Stone added that he and other officers had run in the Special Olympics road run last year, and decided that “it would be good to get involved with other fundraising.” He added that he would be participating in the police run from Decatur to Troy later this year.

The best part of the event for Stone was, “Seeing how people give, the way they give even during the bad times.”
