Rumors of a possible endorsement in the Fairhope mayoral race by the Baldwin County Association of REALTORS (BCAR) were put to rest Thursday after the organization clarified it had not endorsed challenger Karin Wilson.
Wilson’s campaign created a post on Facebook Wednesday afternoon that stated she had been endorsed by the organization.
“Thank you Baldwin County Association of REALTORS for your endorsement of my campaign and the future of Fairhope!” the post stated.
Wilson said it was her understanding that she was the only mayoral candidate in Fairhope receiving support from the organization.
“I asked if I could include this as an endorsement and if they were giving money to any other candidates,” Wilson said. “They said they were giving money to other candidates, but not for the mayor’s race.”
However, the association has committed to donate funds to incumbent Fairhope Mayor Tim Kant’s campaign as well.
Mike Steward, who sits on the board of the political action committee for the Association of REALTORS, said the organization had not endorsed any political candidates in this year’s elections.
“There might have been a misunderstanding with her,” Steward said. “With 1,800-plus members that we’re trying to represent and the differing opinions within the group, we asked her to remove the post since it was creating confusion. She apologized, took it down and thanked us for the support.”
Steward said at the present time, the association would likely not be endorsing any candidates.
“We have not and there are no direct plans to endorse anyone currently,” Steward said. “We express our support to the candidates who support our industry and support protecting homeowners’ rights.”
Wilson removed the Facebook post late Wednesday evening, and BCAR released a statement on its page Thursday afternoon stating it was not endorsing any candidates.
