Team-building is an effective tool that is often initiated in regard to reaching organizational success. Most companies are efficient in using teams to accomplish selected short- and long-term goals. Basically, an effective team is one in which individuals work together in a manner that demonstrates respect for each other and one in which common goals are shared. Good team members are those who do their job intentionally well to a degree that produces positive results.
Unfortunately, when working in teams, conflict can arise and create stressful tension. This negative energy can cripple a team if correct measures are not taken to communicate and eliminate the problems presented in a timely manner. Productive team members must have an internal drive to perform and find successful ways to remain motivated. They must strive to do their best while seeking the best in others. It is inevitable to work with others and never have a disagreement. However, there are situations in which workers must realize that it is acceptable, at times, to simply agree to disagree.
Professionals are those employees who understand what it means to have a good work ethic and deal with conflict on a mature level. They are also people who know how to perform duties in a professional manner without intentionally harassing others. If by chance you become a victim of harassment, remember to report the harassment violation immediately to your supervisor. Moreover, remember to resolve all conflict directly with the other party and at the lowest level, as soon as possible. Wise employees are keen on recognizing the warning signs presented and understand the significance of taking appropriate precautions to decrease the probability of becoming a victim of workplace violence.
When dealing with conflict, no matter what age, career status, or gender, remember to remain calm. It is also wise to remain silent at times and simply listen. Then, attempt to see the disagreement from the other person’s perspective. Afterward, explain your position and try to offer a solution. These steps work much better than displaying an aggressive behavior that entails screaming and attacking another.
Whenever you find yourself in conflict with someone, there is one factor that can make the difference between damaging your relationship and deepening it: attitude.
Think about a time when you have experienced a situation in which you were expected or forced to work with someone else to resolve a conflict. How did this make you feel? Some people welcome the opportunity to help others; some enjoy telling others what to do; yet some are frightened by the thought and consciously avoid confrontations. For the most part, how an individual deals with conflict reflects on his or her attitude, maturity level and self-confidence.
