DAPHNE, Ala.—A redistricting workshop is set for Saturday at 10 a.m. in Daphne City Hall for discussion on the rules and regulations regarding redistricting procedure.
“Redistricting happens every 10 years. All of the cities, counties and school boards have to redistrict after the census comes out,” Willie Williams, president of the Baldwin County Martin Luther King Celebration Committee and resident attending the workshop, said. “Once the official census comes out for the city of Daphne, they will redistrict and it must follow certain principles.”
Dr. Fred Mcbride, redistricting project coordinator for the American Civil Liberty Union Voting Rights Project, will give a presentation.
Local community leaders and government leaders will attend the workshop, which will cover federal and state redistricting laws and procedures, development of redistricting plans and submission of redistricting plans to the Voting Rights Section of the United States Department of Justice.
“This is for every city leader in the southern part of Alabama,” Williams said, “and any citizen that wants to come can come, too.
Daphne City Councilman John Lake, Foley City Councilwomen Vera Quaites and Bay Minette City Councilman Melvin Bradley will be in attendance.
