BALDWIN COUNTY, Alabama - The high school football season is quickly approaching, and this season will bring a few intriguing story lines for fans to follow.
Two Baldwin teams are looking to turn last season’s disappointments into success this year. Head coach Bobby Moore enters his second season at Baldwin County High School after a 1-9 campaign in 2011. Moore’s Tigers were improved from the previous season’s 0-10 mark, although those improvements did not show up much in the win column.
Moore turned around a struggling Bryant High School program before his stop in Bay Minette. His first Stampede team finished 0-10, followed by a 2-8 team in the second year. By the third season Moore had turned Bryant into a 6-5 playoff team.
Robertsdale hired Brian Campbell in the spring to take over for Scott Phelps, who coached the Bears to a 3-7 record last season and a 13-47 record in six seasons. Campbell came from Daphne, where he was an assistant for one of the state’s most storied football powerhouses. The Bears hope Campbell can bring some of Daphne’s winning ways to the Hub City.
Daphne, Spanish Fort and Foley all enter the season with great experience at the quarterback position. Spanish Fort’s Joel Poe, Foley’s Maison Taylor and Daphne’s T.J. Fleeton enter this season with a year of playing experience under their belts. Poe and Fleeton both looked sharp in the Gulf Coast Select 7-on-7 tournament in Gulf Shores and both have big play threats at receiver. Poe can throw to Alabama commitment Deon Johnson, while Fleeton has Horace Johnson and Chris Sain as weapons. Taylor also has a stable of experienced receivers to throw to and a large offensive line to stand behind.
Gulf Shores and Fairhope will both have to replace quarterbacks this season, and Fairhope will have to do it with a new coach. Fairhope hired Adam Winegarden to take over for David Faulkner, who left the Pirates to coach Enterprise. Fairhope must replace Chase Domino at quarterback, while Gulf Shores must replace Troy signee and two-year starter Brandon Silvers as signal caller in head coach Ben Blackmon’s second season.
While Faulkner has left the Eastern Shore to coach in the wiregrass region, he will bring his Enterprise Wildcats team back to Baldwin County three times during the regular season. The Wildcats join Baldwin’s teams in Class 6A Region 2 this year. His first trip back will be to visit Fairhope on Sept. 7 with a return trip to the county Sept. 14 to face BCHS in Bay Minette. The Wildcats will play at Daphne Oct. 26.
