The Rev. Richard Vaughn Colen died Friday, July 2, 2010 while residing at Westminster Village in Spanish Fort.
He was born in New York City and moved to Sag Harbor, N.Y., when he was 9 where he graduated from Pierson High School. He was greatly involved in sports, became an opera buff and was an outstanding violinist in high school. Richard graduated from Fordham University in 1947 and Colgate-Rochester Divinity School in 1952. He served briefly in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II. Five of his pastorates were in New York state, one in Charlotte, N.C., and his last in Meridian, Miss. He received many awards for his community service and he served as president of many organizations over the years. He was a nursing home chaplain for 15 years while living in Millbrook, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Colen.
Survivors include is loving wife of 60 years, Irene Colen; son, Peter (Elizabeth) Colen of Pleasant Valley, N. Y.; several cousins in Sag Harbor, other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 10 from the chapel of Spanish Fort Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow in the Pete Allen Room at Westminster Village. Burial will be held at Oakland Cemetery in Sag Harbor at a later date.
