Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermens Market Opening Set for Oct. 8

FOLEY, Ala. – At long last, the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermen’s Market will open next week.

The market is scheduled to open at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at its County Road 20 location beside Wolf Bay Lodge in Foley.

An official ribbon cutting scheduled for 4 p.m.

Next week’s opening launches the facility’s fall market, which runs through Nov. 23. Hours of operation will be 3-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. each Saturday.

According to Market Manager Heather Pritchard, vendors in the 30-stall facility will have for sale such local items as shrimp, crab, organic beef, herbs, fruit, vegetables, honey, hand-made soap and baked goods.

“We are really excited about some of the items coming to the market later this fall, including satsumas, pecans and other seasonal produce that are just not quite ready yet with all the rain we have had this summer,” she said.

Some vendors are accepting credit cards, while others are cash only, so an ATM is located on site.

As previously reported, the city of Foley received $313,000 in funding from the BP oil spill to begin the endeavor. While additional federal money is anticipated, construction on the $750,000-$900,000 market started in July.

While the market opens Tuesday, that won’t be the first time it will be in use. The South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce will have that honor Saturday night when it hosts the Chicago Street Supper Club, which precedes the second annual Alabama Festival of Flavor in downtown Foley.
