DAPHNE, Ala. — The Daphne Public Library’s Local History Forum will meet at 10 a.m. today at the Old Methodist Church Museum.
Melissa McNichol, guest speaker, will present the Harrison Family letters along with information about family artifacts in the museum.
John Cox Harrison, along with his wife and 13 children, migrated to Alabama in the 1850s.
John — who served in the Confederate Army and was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia on May 5, 1864 — wrote the letters during the Civil War.
“The letters have been scanned and copied,” museum President Mickey Boykin said. “Before, we couldn’t show them because they were the originals, but they will be available to be shown to the public.”
Daphne Utilities will provide free hot dogs, chips and cold drinks.
The museum — formerly the Daphne United Methodist Church — is the second oldest church building in Baldwin County and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Offering events at the landmark is necessary to preserve the community’s awareness of the little church on Dryer Avenue.
“It generates more publicity about the museum,” Boykin said. “We need to have events there now and then to know that the museum is even there.”
The Daphne Local History Forum usually is held in the Daphne Public Library, but its director, Tonja Young, decided to have the museum host the event because of McNichol’s connection to the Daphne landmark.
“We’re partnering and the museum offered to host because the speaker this month has family artifacts in the museum, so we thought it was a good way to highlight both entities,” Young said.
The forum seeks to spread the word about historical collections, sites and events of public interest.
