GULF SHORES, Ala. — Joy will spread throughout the streets of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach in the upcoming weeks as both cities prepare for the holidays.
With Christmas tree lightings, floating parades and cheer to be had by all, it is sure to be a happening holiday season.
This year Gulf Shores will hold its 28th annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Open House on Dec. 4.
“We invite everyone to come and get in the Christmas spirit,” special events coordinator Teri Westbrook said.
Themed “The Twelve Days of Christmas”, plenty of partridges, leaping lords and golden rings will be abound for the evening.
Starting a 6 p.m. at the Eerie Meyer Civic Center, there will be a gathering to witness the lighting of the 2008 Christmas tree.
Following the lighting, the public is welcomed to wander the streets of a winter wonderland.
Strolling from the Bodenhamer Center to the Gulf Shores Museum, and everywhere in between, guests will encounter entertainment from musicians, crafts and the one and only Santa Claus.
Santa will be making a special appearance and will be available for free photos at the Civic Center.
“Every year Santa is very cooperative and comes down from the North Pole to help us out,” Patsy Hollingsworth, special events director, said.
The library will feature karaoke and gingerbread houses on display. The inaugural Holiday Village, toy trains and tae kwon do exhibitions can be viewed at the Bodenhamer Center.
The Gulf Shores Museum will offer members of the Gulf Shores High School choir, crafts and storytelling by Mrs. Clause. The South Baldwin Community Theater will also be open with refreshments and activities.
Westbrook wanted to remind all the event is free.
“It’s a lot of fun to stroll along the avenues with all the lights,” Hollingsworth said. “And it does look like a wonderland.”
This year will be an eco-friendly Christmas as the city has gone green by purchasing additional LED lights to complete the 4,000 feet of power saving, twinkling decorations. The switch to LED lights will reduce power usage by half.
“The city knew and understood that we needed to do something for our environment so we took that first step to be out there doing what we can,” Hollingsworth said.
Orange Beach will hold its Christmas tree lighting on Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. Festivities will be held at City Hall where kids and kids at heart can visit with Santa, enjoy hot chocolate and crafts. Cookie decorating and musical entertainment will help fill the evening.
The Orange Beach Art Center will add to the season with their inaugural “Light Up the Arts” soiree. On Dec. 13 at 6 p.m., patrons can gather to watch the boat parade, view the gallery and meet artists. Live music, refreshments and a silent auction will complete the evening.
