City of Gulf Shores approves speed limit reductions

Posted

The speed limit on several roads in Gulf Shores will be reduced after a request from concerned residents.

Gulf Shores City Council approved the request at its June 26 city meeting to lower the speed limit from 25 to 15 miles per hour on Summerset Drive, Darla Court, Dawson Drive, Raintree Lane and Oaks Drive.

According to documents presented at the meeting, several concerns were brought forth by the HOAs of Osprey Landing, Raintree and Mighty Oaks subdivisions about speeding cars in the presence of children.

The documents presented also discussed a lack of accessibility for first responders in the case of an accident, as all three subdivisions are dead-end streets with single entry points.

"Given that there are no secondary access points for first responders to these developments, we [city staff] support the request to reduce the speed limits to 15 mph to lower the risk of accidents along the internal roadways," city planning staff wrote on the matter.

Now that the ordinance has been approved, the engineering department will collaborate with Public Works to update the signs.

According to the city, the costs associated with creating new signs are already included in the Public Works Streets Division budget.
