Christmas cantata set for Sunday

FOLEY — Two Forward City churches will come together this weekend to present a holiday concert.

Swift Presbyterian Church will be joined by Foley First Presbyterian Church Sunday at 3 p.m. for the free presentation of Joseph Martin’s “A Celebration of Carols.”

“People should expect to hear a lessons-and-Carols program which includes well-known Christmas Carols, as well as new Christmas anthems,” Swift Presbyterian Choir Director Lisa Cardwell said in an online interview.

Those well-known favorities include “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” “Angels We Have Heard on High and Joy to the World.” In addition, the program will include a Christmas power-point presentation and members of both choirs reading Scripture throughout the performance.

But Cardwell said audience members won’t be just listening to the 44-member choir, which includes both adults and children, accompainied by First Presbyterian pianist Gay James.

“The congregation will be invited to join the singers in singing some well-known Christmas Carols,” she said.

Afterward, they’ll be invited to stay after the program for a reception in the Swift fellowship hall, hosted by Swift bakers.

Organized by Cardwell and Foley First Presbyterian Choir Director Doug Brasell, Sunday’s program is the fourth annual Christmas presentation for the two churches.

“This came out of a desire to unite two smaller choirs so that a larger choir experience could be appreciated by the singers,” Cardwell said.

As for this year’s program, each of the choirs have been working on the music since October.

“The choirs rehearse on their own and come together the week of the performance,” Cardwell said.

Swift Presbyterian Church is located at 23208 Swift Church Road in Foley. For more information, call 251-943-8367.
