Christian Service Center aids homebound seniors

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Keeping one’s independence and dignity while being homebound is a substantial challenge many seniors face. Imagine being unable to drive due to health reasons, an unexpected injury or having “slowed-down” in the kitchen.

How can one continue to live at home and avoid moving to an institutional residence prematurely?

Thankfully, many homebound seniors can now remain safely in their homes.

The Christian Service Center of Gulf Shores Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver hot lunchtime meals prepared by Hazel’s Nook Restaurant of Gulf Shores to residents living in Gulf Shores and Fort Morgan.

The Meals on Wheels mission, “that no senior goes hungry,” is to provide life-sustaining nutrition to help seniors keep their independent lifestyle.

Home delivery includes the benefits of daily personal contact, ensures the resident is safe, well provided for and gives peace of mind to the recipient’s friends and family.

Other CSC programs include Food Pantry, Children’s Birthday Club, Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy, and Loaner Handicap Equipment Program.

In 2008, 4,429 individuals received help from the CSC, including 1802 children. Donations are always welcome and are tax deductible.

Food, new toys and handicap equipment can be dropped off at the CSC during business hours. Monetary donations to support community programs can be mailed to CSC, P.O. Box 882, Gulf Shores, AL 36547.
