Children’s of Alabama transformed its hospital patio into a gingerbread-themed mini tree farm last week, offering patients and their families a festive holiday experience complete with snow, decorations and a chance to choose a Christmas tree for their rooms.
The annual Tree Farm, presented by Ace Hardware, marked its seventh year as a hospital tradition per a news release. Hundreds of 3-foot trees lined the patio, allowing families to select a tree and holiday decorations while spending time together outside patient rooms. Each family also received a blanket and the Tree Farm’s annual ornament.
The event was designed to give hospitalized children a sense of normalcy and celebration during the holiday season. A gingerbread house created by artist Abby Jessup served as a backdrop for photos, adding to the immersive theme.
“This event gives patients a chance to enjoy a family activity, even though they are hospitalized,” Carmen Maddox, manager of Community Development at Children’s of Alabama, said in the release. “We are so fortunate to have the support of Ace retailers around the state and others in the community. This support allows families to enjoy some holiday magic.”
Children’s of Alabama staff worked alongside community partners to bring the experience to life. Ace Hardware served as the presenting sponsor, with additional support from HOAR Construction, artist Abby Jessup and the Junior League of Birmingham.
