Children dance and sing the morning away with The Zinghoppers (SEE 9 PHOTOS INSIDE!)

DAPHNE, Ala. — The Daphne Public Library’s summer reading program may be approaching its end, but children of all ages enjoyed dancing and singing along with The Zinghoppers and Claire the Polar Bear on Monday at the recreation department, and next Monday children are invited to attend a magic show.

The Zinghoppers got the children off their feet to enjoy an hour of dancing and singing.

Hannah Stone, 5, of Spanish Fort said her favorite part of the show was participating in it as a spectator.

“My favorite part was the dancing,” she said.

Ruby Smith, 6, of Daphne, said her favorite part was toward the end of the event.

“My favorite part was winning prizes,” she said. She wasn’t a big fan of the dancing.

Hailee Stone, 3, of Spanish Fort, was out on the dance floor all morning.

“I liked dancing with the polar bear,” she said.

The summer reading program began with a kickoff on June 6 at the library, and so far this month has been filled with story times, reading and events like the Zinghoppers performance today.

The theme of this year’s program is “One World, Many Stories” for young children and “You are Here” for middle- and high-school-aged students.

Young adult librarian Louise Youngblood said the program was designed to encourage children to read by exposing them to the fun aspects of reading and the other worlds reading can open up.

During the summer reading program, children of all ages have been keeping up with the books they read in June on their reading logs, which they will turn in on June 30. The children have been encouraged to write down the number of pages they have read, and Youngblood said it didn’t matter if they were reading a chapter-book, a magazine or a newspaper — as long as they were reading.

The top readers in each age group will receive awards and prizes at the awards ceremony on July 4 at 4:30 p.m.

“Children who have read the most will receive gift cards in the upper age group, and younger children will receive prizes as well,” Youngblood said.

Stone said she has already read five books for the summer reading program, and she plans on reading more before the reading logs are due.

“My favorite book I have read so far was a Scooby Doo book,” she said.

Smith said she has already read six books.

“My favorite book so far was called 'The Cow that Went Oink,'" she said.

On June 27, beginning at 10:30 a.m., Russell Davis, a magician, will perform.
