Chef wants residents to 'pig' out for SEEDS

DAPHNE — And this little piggy helped raise funds for area schools.

That’s the goal of the 1st Annual Pig in the Park, a fundraiser for Supporting Educational Enrichment in Daphne’s Schools, a local education foundation.

Pig in the Park 2007 will be held Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Jubilee Courtyard in Olde Towne Daphne.

A special menu is planned for the luncheon, featuring the culinary skills of Chef Will Hughes, said SEEDS spokesperson Denise D’Oliveira.

“Our own well-known, local chef Will Hughes plans to fire up his father’s Cuban pig roaster in the alley beside his store,” she said.

His shop, Will Hughes Catering and Market, is located at 1716 Main St.

“He will be dishing out ‘couchon du lait,’ a Cajun dish made of shredded barbecue pork served on a French-bread po-boy.” D’Oliveira said.

Side dishes will include black bean-and-corn salad, roasted potato salad, chips and dessert.

For his part, Hughes said he is enthusiastic about plans for the upcoming fundraiser.

“We’ve been active members of SEEDS for the past couple of years and we just want to get more people involved in improving education,” Hughes said. “And in building a great downtown atmosphere in Olde Daphne.”

Chad Geddings will provide musical entertainment in the courtyard during the event, she said.

Advance tickets are $15 and will be $20 on the day of the event, D’Oliveira said.

Each person who purchases a ticket will also receive a commemorative “1st Annual Pig in the Park” T-shirt, D’Oliveira said.

“Since we are planning to make this an annual event, we also thought that we’d have a special shirt to go along with it,” she said with a chuckle, adding that she hopes the T-shirts may become collectible items.

“The pig on this year’s shirt is pink, but who knows what it will be next year?” she said.

Advance tickets can be purchased at the following local businesses:

* Will Hughes Catering and Market;

* Daphne Recreation Department;

* The Frame Corner;

* Riviera Utilities; and

* Market by the Bay

Tickets can also be purchased in advance at Page&Palette and Red or White Wine Discount Center, both in Fairhope.
