Chanukah celebrations planned for Baldwin, Mobile

MOBILE — The Chabad of Mobile will host a pair of community Chanukah celebrations this week in Mobile and Baldwin counties.

Known as the Festival of Lights, Chanukah (or Hanukkah) is a Jewish festival commemorating the recovery of Jerusalem and the rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the Maccabean revolt against the Selecuid Empire in the 2nd Century B.C.

Observed over eight days and nights, this year’s festival officially began Sunday, Nov. 28 and continues through Monday, Dec. 6.

Led by Rabbi Yosef Goldwasser, in Baldwin County, the celebration will be held beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2 at the Fairhope Pier.

The celebration includes the lighting of a 9-foot menorah, greetings from city council members, raffle for a moon lamp, Chanukah suncatcher craft for kids, treats and live music.

In Mobile, the celebration will be held beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30 in Bienville Square.
