ROBERTSDALE, Alabama -- Career Tech Education students at Central Baldwin Middle School are looking to shine in competitions set to begin next month.

The Students Taking Action with Recognition (S.T.A.R.) state competition will be held at Auburn University at Montgomery March 15-16.

A total of 10 students are preparing for five separate competitions hoping to compete in national competition, which will be held this year in Nashville, Tenn.

“FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America) is a youth-central organization that strives to teach young women and men leadership and life skills through career exploration,” said Dawn Hopper, CBMS Family Consumer Sciences Career Tech Education supervisor at CBMS. “Our students have been working hard preparing for the competition and they are committed to prepare for the state competition in hopes of representing our school at the national level.”

One student is working on an individual project for the competition, while there are four sets of two-person teams preparing projects.

Eighth grader Sara Devine will also attend the competition as a budding delegate.

“FCCLA helps us gain a wide variety of experience,” she said. “It affords us the opportunity to help in our community and gives us the opportunity to travel to competitions like these.”

Carson Campbell, 13, and Miranda Campbell, 14, both eighth graders, are working on a Chapter Service Project Display.

They will be developing a visual display in which they chronicle the group’s preparation for this past year’s Central Baldwin Relay for Life, including going to Ronald McDonald House, where they prepared a meal for the families of young cancer victims; and a blood drive which was held at the school.

Jesse Manns and Mia Martinez, both 14-year-old eighth graders at CBMS, are working on a Chapter Showcase, Manual project.

As part of the project, they will develop a scrapbook and make a presentation at competition chronicling their school’s Veteran’s Day program.

Carol Ann Salter and Sara Beth Orr, both 13-year-old eighth graders, are preparing for National Programs in Action competition.

They are exploring the No Family Hungry program where they participated in the Thanksgiving scavenger hunt for Prodisy Pantry and the Super Bowl.

Hannah Wallace and Sydney Young, both 13-year-old seventh graders, are preparing for Nutrition and Wellness Competition, focusing on fitness awareness.

As part of the project, they will be working with physical education teachers at CBMS on a program which will include a scavenger hunt and wellness program, held at the school on March 8.

Emory Jordan, 12, a seventh grader, is preparing for Career Investigation competition.

She will be exploring the world of art, including an interview with her art teacher at CBMS and a display with examples of her own art, as well as examples of various styles of art.

Hopper, along with volunteers Regina Salter and Shanna Barnette, will also attend the competition.
