C.C. Davis, 89, of Daphne (formerly of Gadsden, Ala.), passed away April 23, 2013.
He was a member of Christ Central Church, Rainbow City, Ala.
Davis attended public schools in both DeKalb and Marshall counties, but dropped out of high school in December 1943, at age 17 and joined the United States Army. He served as a cavalry instructor during World War II at Fort Riley, Kan. He received an honorable discharge in 1946.
After discharge, he was employed by Republic Steel Corp. and attended night school, completing his high school education at age 23.
He continued to work at Republic Steel as a supervisor in the shipping department of the sheet mill while attending both Snead Junior College and the University of Alabama Center.
Davis left Republic Steel in 1950 to become a fulltime student at Auburn University, completing his bachelor of science degree in agriculture in 1952. Davis subsequently earned a master’s of science in education in 1956.
Mr. Davis was superintendent of Etowah County Schools from 1965 to 1973 and of Gadsden City Schools from 1974 to 1983.
After he retired in 1983, he was an active volunteer with the Gadsden Exchange Club, American Heart Association and the Gadsden Museum of Art, to name a few.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Sylvester Davis and Alma Davis; and brothers, Hubert Davis, Cecil Davis and Sylvester Jr. Davis; and sisters, Ione Young, Grace Lamb, Juanita Harter and Lois Knight.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Inez Davis; sisters, Helen Young, Betty Sue Lanier and Lealla Hood; children, Michael Davis, Robin Davis, Gaye Davis Hudson and Meredith Davis Nix; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 26, 2013 at Daphne United Methodist Church, 2401 Main St. in Daphne. Dr. Bob McKibben will officiate. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. A graveside service will follow at Silverhill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jacob Davis, Matthew Davis, Andrew Davis, Carey Coxwell, Ric Hudson and Rob Renner.
