Carrie Watkins Costen Hogan was born June 2, 1917 in Red Level to Charles Aubrey and Carrie Eugenia Watkins Costen. She passed away Jan. 20, 2015.

Carrie was the youngest of nine children. Her father died when she was 5 years old, and she was raised by her mother, sisters and brothers.

She graduated from Red Level High School, Class of 1935, was a cheerleader and dated the captain of the football team, C.J. Hogan. On March 15, 1936, they married. They celebrated their 78th wedding anniversary in 2014.

Commitment and loyalty were two of her outstanding traits. She and C.J. moved their family from Red Level to Brewton, to Greenville, and then to Bay Minette, where she supported her husband in various business ventures.

In 1957 they opened Hogan’s Home Furnishings in Bay Minette where she worked alongside him as bookkeeper for many years.

They became active members of First Baptist Church in Bay Minette where she served as Sunday school teacher, GA director, WMU officer and caretaker of babies extraordinaire.

Always placing her family first, she was a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother beyond compare. She taught her children by her example and expectations.

Her talents included making tomato pudding, frugal use of all things, making her daughters’ dresses, entertaining children with clay and Play-Doh, and memorizing stats of the Atlanta Braves.

She was an avid reader, and loved solving crossword puzzles.

She was predeceased by her husband, C.J. Hogan.

She is survived by her four children, Jeanette Beisner (Bob), Don Hogan (Heike), Carrie Ann Hare (Ralph) and Kathleen Ingram (Eddie); nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. With another on the way.

The family’s deepest thanks go to the staffs at Magnolia Place in Auburn and St. Martin’s in the Pines in Birmingham for the exceptional and compassionate care they have shown.

Visitation will be at First Baptist Church in Bay Minette from 11 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, followed by a memorial service.
