Campaign criticism is ‘off base’

I have the utmost respect for Mr. Taney A. Brazeal but feel he is off base with his letter to the editor titled “Riley, Byrne should stay out of campaign”.

The advertisements that show Randy McKinney, candidate for Senate District 32, with both Governor Riley and Chancellor Byrne are not posed. These are actual occasions when Mr. McKinney is being recognized for his effective, tireless work in his present position on the Alabama State Board of Education. I’m quite sure that Governor Riley and Chancellor Byrne recognize that the people of Baldwin County are capable of choosing the right person to represent them. As I recall, the people of Baldwin County overwhelmingly elected both Governor Riley and former State Senator Byrne.

As to the question of obligations to several organizations that are supporting Mr. McKinney, it is my understanding that all the candidates who were running for this seat interviewed with these business organizations. These organizations chose Mr. McKinney because they felt that he was the best candidate based on his education, experience and leadership.

Had either of Mr. Brazeal’s two candidates been chosen, I’m sure they would have taken the support, or they would not have gone for the interviews.
