David Hubbard Callaway, 83, died Thursday, March 4, 2010.
He was born the seventh of eight children March 2, 1927 in Orange Beach to James Amel and Mildred H. Callaway.
He joined the U.S. Army during World War II and served a tour of duty in Japan as part of the occupational forces. While in the Army he earned his paratrooper wings. After being discharged from military service in 1946 he returned to Foley High School, where he earned honors as an All-Star running back on the football team. On Oct. 15, 1999 he and several of his teammates were inducted into the Foley High School Football Hall of Fame.
After graduation from Foley High School and attending the Polytechnic Institute in Auburn and Livingston College, he returned to Orange Beach, joining his family’s charter fishing business.
In 1951 he entered the Naval Aviation Apprentice School at NAS Pensacola in the Dynamic Components Division as part of the newly established Naval Aviation Rework FAcilty. Thirty-two years later he retired from Civil Service and went to work 22 years with Avis Car Rental in Pensacola.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, James and Mildred Callaway; three brothers, James, Ray and Billy Callaway; and three sisters, Lois Besette, Katie “Brownie” Lauder and Eleanor Lauder.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Marie Byers Feuchtinger Callaway; brother, Macklin (Jackie) Callaway; sister-in-law, Ella Callaway Fleming; two daughters, Susan Callaway and Debra (Mike) Morros; son, Reed (Carol) Callaway; their mother, Ellen Rummel; Marie’s sons, William (Mindy) Feuchtinger, Dennis Feuchtinger, Joel (Zhanna) Feuchtinger, and Jack Feuchtinger; grandchildren, Brian Callaway, Amanda (David) Kerr, Karena Kramer, Katie (Josh) Vallot, Katlin Kramer, Lesley Pugh, Warren (Alisha) Feuchtinger, Michael Feuchtinger, Heather Feuchtinger, Melissa Feuchtinger, Cody Feuchtinger, Alex Dashkov, and Ivan Feuchtinger; two great-grandchildren, Kallel Broxson and Gabrielle Vallot; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation was held Sunday, March 7 at Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens, Pensacola, Fla. Funeral services were held Monday, March 8 at the funeral home with the Rev. Ralph LaGuardia of Fairfield Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment followed at Miller Memorial Cemetery, Gulf Shores. A reception followed at the First Baptist Church of Orange Beach.
