Businesses, churches in Orange Beach left papers related to candidate, mayor

ORANGE BEACH, Alabama – Barring an interruption by the storm Isaac churning ashore, Tuesday voters in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach will vote on six contested city council seats.

On Friday, some businesses and churches in Orange Beach opened doors to find a five-sheet package of papers with a mug shot of Jeff Boyd, one of Brett Holk’s challengers for Place 2 in Tuesday’s election. Boyd was arrested on a DUI charge in May of 2010.

A copy of the arrest report was one of five sheets accompanying the handout. Charges against him were thrown out for lack of evidence, Boyd said.

“Before I ever started this race I was afraid of what Brett would do and it was why I wasn’t going to run in this seat,” Boyd said. “I even told my wife to be prepared what may happen.

“This morning instead of being a celebration for my birthday with my children, I was having to explain to them these charges and how they were dropped. It was not a celebration at all. It was an explanation that this is a political world and people will use stuff like this to be deceitful and hurt you.”

Efforts to reach Holk on Friday afternoon were unsuccessful. A message for a return call from the Islander was left in his voice mail.

Also attached was a letter from a law office in Mississippi concerning Kennon and an alleged altercation on a bus in Orange Beach. The letter was dated May 5, 2011.

“The charges are absolutely false,” Kennon said Saturday morning. “This is an election-day ploy to embarrass and I’m saddened by it.”

The final sheet was Kennon’s filing notice of his campaign committee in his run for Mayor in 2008. Boyd is listed as the treasurer for the campaign on that document.

In Gulf Shores only two council seats, Place 1 and Place 3 are up for grabs today. In Orange Beach, Places 1, 2, 3 and 5 are being contested.

The Orange Beach race heated up at the Aug. 21 council meeting when Holk questioned Kennon about a meeting he had with city employees. During that meeting, Holk said, Kennon was asked who he supported.

Kennon said he told employees he did not support neither Holk nor Place 3 incumbent Pattisue Simpson for re-election. Orange Beach employs approximately 200 workers, about 40 of which live in the city limits and are eligible to vote in the election.

On Tuesday in Gulf Shores, incumbent Joe Garris is seeking his third straight term in Place 1. He is challenged by Lynn Byrd and Ron Kutter.

Phillip Harris is the incumbent in Place 3 and he faces Chip Wisdom in today’s vote.

Mayor Robert Craft, Place 2 Councilwoman Carolyn Doughty, Place 4 Councilman Jason Dyken and Place 5 Councilman Steve Jones were all unopposed and have already been certified for another term.

In Orange Beach, Place 1 incumbent Ed Carroll did not seek re-election and Al Bradley and Iris Ethridge are vying for that open spot.

Holk faces both Boyd and Ty Fleming Sr. in the race for Place 2.

In Place 3, Simpson is challenged by Jerry Johnson and in Place 5, incumbent Joni Blalock is challenged by Kris Jones.

Kennon and Place 4 Councilman Jeff Silvers faced no opposition and have been certified for another four years.
