Frederick William Burkle, 77, a native of Elizabeth, N.J., and a resident of Foley, died Sunday, April 5, 2009, at his residence.
He served for 52 years with the Foley Volunteer Fire Department. He served in the U.S. Navy with the V P- 94 (Crawfishers Squadron), for 39 years. He was an employee with the City of Foley, serving as the Civic Center Manager for 10 years.
He was an avid supporter of local civic clubs and was on the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross. He served on the board for the Boys Ranch. He was a member of the Vestry at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Foley.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Burkle of Foley; three sons, Frederick C. Burkle of Dallas, Roderick W. (Terry) Burkle of Foley and Derrick T. (Dawn) Burkle of Sumter, S.C.; three daughters, Merrilee A. (Kerry) Slota of Foley, Carole Ann (Ernie) Hudson of Maryville, Tenn., and Sally (Jack) Roach of Waynesville, N.C.; son, Michael Buckley; seven grandchildren, Tessa Slota, Taelor Slota, Natalie Burkle, Cody Burkle, Nicole Burkle, Katherine Hudson and Michelle Roach.
Visitation was held Tuesday, April 7 at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Foley. Services were held Wednesday, April 8 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Foley, with Father Keith Talbert and Father Steve Pankey officiating. Interment followed at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola, Fla.
