Bragg to speak at Fairhope library

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Award-winning author and journalist Rick Bragg will speak on June 26, at 6 p.m., at the Fairhope Public Library. Tickets are $20, and include beverages and hors d’oeuvres.

Tickets are available at local libraries, and will help support the countywide library automation system.

“Mr. Bragg will read from his latest book, ‘The Prince of Frogtown,’” said Liz Reed, director of the Baldwin County Library Cooperative. “It’s the final book in his Calhoun County Trilogy and it’s Bragg at his finest … a great story and a moving tribute to the power of unconditional love.”

Proceeds from the evening will help fund the library automation system that runs circulation and cataloging for the 11 libraries in the county. The system allows patrons to request books from any library and return them to any library without incurring a late charge.

The Calhoun County Trilogy is Bragg’s evocation of life in a small Alabama mill town.

“All Over but the Shoutin’” (1998) introduces Bragg’s mother. “Ava’s Man” (2001) introduces Bragg’s grandfather, and in “The Prince of Frogtown” (2008), we meet Bragg’s father.

Bragg’s books will be available for sale and signing at the event.

Bragg won the Pulitzer Prize for journalism in 1996 and received this year’s Harper Lee Award as Alabama’s Distinguished Writer of the Year.

He received the Clarence Cason Award in 2004 and the American Society of Newspaper Editors Distinguished Writing Award in 1996.

He is currently professor of writing at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

The Baldwin County Library Cooperative includes the Bay Minette Public Library, Daphne Public Library, Fairhope Public Library, Foley Public Library, Loxley Public Library, Marjorie Younce Snook Public Library in Summerdale, Orange Beach Public Library, Oscar Johnson Memorial Library in Silverhill, the Robertsdale Public Library, the Thomas B. Norton Public Library in Gulf Shores and the Baldwin County Library in Robertsdale.
