DAPHNE — Pat Odom completed the judging today at the Bay Rivers Art Guild for the Mobile Watercolors and Graphics Society’s juried show.
The winners will be announced Saturday at a block party, according to BRAG President Valley O’Neal.
Representatives from the Mobile Watercolor and Graphics Society visited BRAG about six months ago, seeking a location for its juried show, according to O’Neal.
“It’s somewhere that we haven’t been before. We felt like it would be an exciting, new venue,” said Janie Brown, president of the society.
“I think our enthusiasm got it for us, because we were thrilled about the show,” O’Neal said.
“The benefit that we get is that a lot of the people are from Mobile and they will bring families and friends that have never been to BRAG before,” O’Neal said.
“That’s what BRAG is all about: bringing art to the public,” she added.
This show also features candidates up for membership, according to O’Neal.
“It is not easy to become a member (of the society),” Brown, a member of 15 years, said.
About 14 candidates are up for membership this year, she said. Two active members have to formally nominate someone and then current active members vote on the candidates.
A juried show means that not everyone will get to display their artwork, O’Neal said.
The judge removes work that may lack good quality or is deemed unworthy to be in the show; then the actual judging begins, according to O’Neal.
“A lot of it depends on the judge and their personal taste,” she said.
The judge is picked on their reputation, ability and is usually outstanding in the art world, according to O’Neal.
The artwork will be on display at BRAG from Oct. 20 to Nov. 20.
The block party is Saturday, Oct. 20, at 5:30 p.m. The event is free.
