• Toros repeat as area champions/Trojans finish as runner up

SPANISH FORT, Ala.— The Toros withstood a third-quarter Daphne rally and finished with a 21-12 home-court run to secure a 64-51 win and the 2015-16 Class 6A, Area 2 championship Saturday night at SFHS.

“Great team effort against a really good team,” Spanish Fort coach Dru Powell said. “Anytime you beat a team in February that already has 20 wins is a real accomplishment. When you consider we beat them three times including in double-overtime there. And add in they’re also your big neighboring as well as conference rival, I have to be super proud of my guys tonight.

“Daphne has really good guards who can shoot well and don’t quit so, it’s always a challenge to contain Teion (Stanton) and D.D. (Deontaye Buskey), but we got it done. So, definitely a good victory for us to go forward with.”

Terrin Atkinson led the Toros with 21 points and five steals. Trae Barry had 18 points and 12 rebounds. Justin Thomas had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Michael Meador added nine points and seven rebounds for SF.

The Trojans were led by Stanton with 12 points, Buskey with 11 and Dre Graves with nine.

Atkinson was named the tournament MVP. Joining him on the All-Area 2 tourney team were teammates Barry and Thomas, Samir Hamlin and Stanton of Daphne, Reed Davidson of Robertsdale, Isiah Dortch of Baldwin County High and Brent Julian of Gulf Shores.
