Billy Gene Chastain was born in Jackson, Ala. on Aug. 12, 1928, the son of Bill Arp Chastain and Anniebell Chapel Chastain. He died Sept. 29, 2013 in Baldwin County, where he spent the happiest days throughout his life fishing with his family in the Gulf of Mexico.
He attended Auburn University, and was a successful timber contractor for many years.
He met and married the love of his life, Helen Chastain, in Jackson. They were married for more than 50 years.
Billy is survived by his wife, Helen Chastain; his daughter, Mandy Upshaw (Nathan); two grandchildren, Henry and Hayes; his brother, George Chastain; and sisters, Jo Ann Nungesser (Chris) and Barbara Howell (Jack).
He was preceded in death by his son, Larry Gene Chastain.
Billy was adored by his grandchildren, and he was the epitome of a man devoted to his family, his faith and friends.
He was quite the wood craftsman, and he used his God-given talent to serve the Lord by making wooden crosses as a testimony of his faith. A great number of those wooden crosses are everywhere from Gulf Shores to mission fields in other countries.
His strong faith and servitude leaves us at peace that he is home with our Lord, Jesus Christ.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will take place on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 11 a.m., at Bethel Cemetery in Jackson, Ala.
Memorials may be made to the mission or charity of your choice.
Arrangements by Cason Funeral Service, Foley.
