Two bicyclists were struck and killed Monday morning by a teenager believed to be under the influence of alcohol, State Troopers said.
William Frederick Imle, 48, of Daphne and Archie Leroy Clemons Jr., 46, of Spanish Fort, were riding west on Bromley Road when they were struck and killed by a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, Cpl. Joe Piggott, a State Trooper spokesman said.
The truck was driven by Patrick Blake Young Ballard, 19, of Spanish Fort, and was traveling east.
Ballard was arrested by State Troopers around noon Tuesday at 30357 Wayside Drive, a news release said.
According to a news release, Ballard failed to negotiate a curve, struck the cyclists and went into a ditch before the truck overturned, ejecting Ballard and an unidentified 17-year-old female passenger.
Imle and Clemons were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that occurred shortly before 9 a.m. Monday.
Ballard and his passenger were admitted to USAMC for treatment and were later released.
In June 2005, Ballard was charged with manslaughter in the death of another bicyclist, Larry McDuff.
McDuff was traveling southbound in Fairhope when he was killed on his way to Bee Natural Farm, the co-op where he tended to animals and crops in return for fresh, organically grown produce.
Ballard was the driver of the black 1991 Jeep Cherokee that struck McDuff. According to witnesses, the vehicle sped away from the scene. It was later found abandoned near a wooded area on the south side of town. Fairhope police said the license plate had been removed.
Ballard eventually turned himself into police headquarters. Ballard was charged with manslaughter. However, McDuff’s family decided to forgive Ballard and not bring any charges against him.
Ballard was charged Tuesday with two counts of murder. He was booked into the Baldwin County Corrections Center in Bay Minette. A dispatcher said the bond has been set at $50,000 for each charge.
According to Cpl. Piggott, toxicological specimens were obtained Monday at USAMC and submitted to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for analysis.
“While some aspects of the crash remain under investigation, troopers believe alcohol and speed were factors in the crash,” Piggott said in an e-mail.
Clemons is survived by his wife, Dana; his daughter, Emily, and his son, Scott; his mother, June Bassett and her husband Jake of Perry Fla.; his sister Barbara English and her husband Mark of Birmingham.
Visitation for Clemons was held Wednesday and memorial services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Spanish Fort United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be Saturday, Sept. 8 at 11 a.m. at Pine View Memorial Gardens in Perry, Fla.
